The Brookwood Community is an extensive campus in Brookshire, Texas which serves the needs of adults with special needs. With 110 full time citizens and over 80 adults participating in the day programs, the community meets the citizens wholistic needs in part by allowing them space and training to create and sell crafts. The new Education and Enterprise Center includes extensive studio and support spaces for the citizens, display areas for the wares, offices, multiuse classroom space, and a shipping and receiving warehouse.
Due to the special needs of the citizens, special attention was paid to avoid harmful effects of the lighting. Flicker rates were analyzed, and direct glare was minimized by incorporating indirect lighting and diffuse sources. Warm tone lighting was used to bring a calming, comforting feel to the space, and light levels were evaluated to ensure that even those with disabilities could perform the tasks needed for their work.
